Lemonade Spritzers
First, heat 3/4 cup sugar in 1 cup of water until sugar is dissolved. Then add your sweet syrup to about 3 cups club soda and about 2 cups fresh lemon juice (you can adjust these proportions to make it as strong or weak as you like). Add vodka if desired (about 1 1/2 oz per serving). Serve over ice, and garnish with fresh lime rounds, strawberry slices, or even watermelon wedges. Original...

Is It A Cold...Or Is It Allergies?
I have been sick three - THREE - times since February. I know, suppressed immune system (so that you don’t reject the baby, which is, of course, half-comprised of someone else entirely), etc etc…but I am sick to death of being deathly sick. When I woke up all sorts of miserable yesterday, though, I thought that maybe the intense heatwave had brought on heretofore unknown allergies...

Strip Steak with Arugula / Tangy Potato Salad
This is an absolutely perfect no-fuss summer dinner, and takes only about 20 minutes, start-to-finish. Just boil the potatoes while your steak cooks, and then toss them in the vinaigrette while the steak rests. (I served this alongside ears of sweet corn with lots of salty, garlicky butter…amazing.) Serves 2. TANGY POTATO SALAD What you need: 4-5 red potatoes, halved or quartered...

Weekend Snapshots
(Any weekend that starts out at John’s Pizzeria is bound to be a good one.) The #1 thing I was excited about this weekend was seeing Hangover 2, and the degree of horribleness of that movie was nothing short of heartbreaking. It is exactly the same as the first movie. Exactly. To the point where all of the characters need to keep remarking upon how weird it is that everything is exactly...

John Sahag Workshop Keratin Treatment
Good news for you, as the summer humidity kicks in: I obviously can’t get Keratin at the moment (that’s a shot from a rainy - and ordinarily majorly frizz-inducing - day a couple of months after my first treatment, hence the remarkably smooth hair and alcoholic beverage)…but that doesn’t mean that you can’t! Yesterday I stopped into John Sahag Workshop and...

Pale & Graphic
On the way home from a meeting the other day, I picked up two $12 dresses at H&M - one in the size I am now, and one in the size I expect I’ll be in just a few weeks. This is basically the cardinal sin of pregnancy purchasing: all of the books say not to buy anything (especially bras) in advance, because you never know how quickly or how much your size will fluctuate…but…I...

Mixed Green, Pomegranate & Avocado Salad
I served those lovely chicken and peach turnovers with a simple (and pretty) side salad: Serves 2 2 large handfuls mixed greens + 1/2 avocado, diced + seeds & juice from 1/2 pomegranate (watch out for that stuff; it instantly stains anything it touches) + 2 tbsp goat cheese + 1/2 tsp lemon juice + Olive oil, salt, pepper Original Article

Remember back when I made these? Last night I wanted them again, but got completely entranced by the arrival of the season’s first ripe peaches and decided to give them a summery twist. For awhile now, Francesca’s been telling me about this amazing Tuscan restaurant on Christopher and Bleecker that she’s been going to for lunch called Il Cantuccio (above, she’s with one of the owners, Camilla). Bridal Shower Gifting Tips...Plus Gift Ideas
When it comes to bridal shower gifts, I am of two minds. If the bride has a ton of stuff on her registry or if I don’t know her particularly well (think office buddies and distant-ish relatives), I’ll go for a registry gift she’s sure to love, skewing towards more feminine, luxury items (kitchen toys or decorative pieces) rather than practical things. If I want to give her a...

How gorgeous is Essie Vermillionaire?? I think I’m a bit late to the party for this one - it’s from the Summer 2010 Collection, which is all beautiful stuff (trying Pretty Edgy next) - but hello, perfect at-the-beach shade. Tip Of The Day: Amazingly Melty Grilled Cheese
Yesterday I stopped into Polish on 2nd Ave for a pedicure, and picked up this month’s Glamour to read while my toes dried. And came across a grilled cheese tip so simple, and yet so genius, that I had to immediately go home and make one. The magazine advised spreading a touch of mayo (as opposed to butter) on the outsides of the slices before frying. Aside from being lower in saturated fat...

Twilight Hour
I don’t go out much these days. At the moment, I’m more into Grey’s Anatomy with oreos than Grey Goose with olives. But that said, there are times - like the bachelorette party of one of your best friends - when you are going to a bar, and that’s what’s happening: no excuses. And when you’re in sweatpants most evenings, it’s nice to take advantage of...

Wonderful Little Birthday Celebrations
I turn 30 on Thursday. Yiiiikes. Also exciting; I’ve always looked forward to my thirties. My twenties were…well…up-and-down, to say the least, and I’ve always felt hopeful that this decade would be a great one. And once, back in the fifth grade, a boy that I had a crush on told me that I’d look like Heather Locklear when I was 30. We can always hope. Anyway, since...

Vosges Barcelona Bar FYI
Just FYI? The Vosges Barcelona Bar (deep milk chocolate, hickory smoked almonds & grey sea salt) is ridiculously good. Especially if you eat it the rather fussy way recommended on the label (take small bites, let it melt on the roof of your mouth to release the flavors, etc). I don’t know that it’s quite a Mo’s Bacon Bar…but it’s close. Original Article
