Personalize Your Rental Apartment / A Charmed Wife

Remember my friend Lily from the Rent The Runway post? Well, today the lovely lady behind A Charmed Wife is here with some rental apartment personalization tips (for a few of my own, click here). Thanks so much, Lily!

- Jordan

9 Ways to Personalize A Rental Apartment (Without Losing Your Security Deposit).

While Jordan is on vacay (drink a rum punch for me, J!) she asked if I’d pop over and supply a post about something “home” related. Given that I am the world’s biggest homebody (true story: I was born at home, home-schooled through eighth grade, and now I work from home), I jumped at the chance to talk about my favorite topic.

My husband and I bought our first apartment a couple summers ago, and I have spent at least part of every day since working on it (with no possible end to the projects in sight). And while I’m proud of how my spackling and drain-unclogging skills have improved in the intervening years, sometimes I look back and long for the simplicity of our old rental apartment where we had a building super to do those things for us. Before this, we spent five years in a rental apartment, which had a lot of quirks we had to learn to live with (we had a galley kitchen with literally no counter space - and I mean that “literally” literally).

But what I discovered during those years was that just because you live in a rental doesn’t mean you can’t personalize and decorate it to your tastes. With a little imagination, and a little elbow grease, any rental can be made to feel like it’s yours (even if it technically is owned by someone else). And while some of these ideas can be little pricey, they are worth the investment because almost all of them can be removed, packed up, and brought with you to your next rental. So get to it, and make yourself at home.

9 Tips…after the jump!

1. Paint: Nothing says “boring rental apartment” like plain white walls. Your rental agreement may forbid you to paint them another color, but that doesn’t mean you can’t change them now and then change them back before you move out. If you are going to be living in your place for a year or less, it’s a lot of work to paint a whole room (although not as much as you may think- it only takes an afternoon), but you might consider painting just one wall a bold color, like red, to make a real statement. Putting a pretty color on the walls is the fastest and easiest way to make an apartment feel decorated and homey. And it can cure all kinds of problems: We painted our living room a soft sunny yellow, and you could hardly tell that it was 36 square feet and had no windows. Well, it helped.

2. Use Rugs: Another dead giveaway of a standard-issue rental is a standard-issue parquet floor. There’s nothing wrong with wood flooring, but in most rentals the floors have taken a sustained beating over the years and have become severely worn and scuffed. Cover those spots with soft, comfortable rugs and you’ll feel like you’re in a cozy cottage as you pad your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

3. Hang Framed Art: If you are over the age of 20, and no longer live in a dorm, I must implore you to stop putting unframed things on your wall. You can find inexpensive standard-sized frames to hold you photos, posters, and other artworks at any homegoods store or Walmart/Kmart/Target. Or look into removable wall decals. Just make sure you put something on the walls, or it will feel like you’re living in an institution.

4. Get Bookshelves: If you want your apartment to have that “a smart person lives here” look, you are going to need to find a place to put your books (other than in piles under the coffee table). For tons of extra storage, you can fake the look of built-in bookshelves with large bookcases that take up a whole wall. Check out the “Expedit” from Ikea, or the inexpensive offerings from Gothic Cabinet Craft.

5. Make Your Bed: Your bedroom should be more than just where you sleep and leave your clothes on the floor. It should be your sanctuary; your den of relaxation and meditation. And that all starts with your bed. For crying out loud, buy yourself a decent mattress and sheets, and make your bed look like something. I recommend buying an inexpensive headboard, or using two big Euro sham pillows propped against the wall to fake the look of one. I also love a good swing-arm lamp beside the bed to make your boudoir a comfortable and functional place to work and read. They mount to the wall with just a couple screws and plug in to a socket (no electrical work required)

6. Lighting: Most rental apartments come with some seriously unpleasant lighting. If it’s not ugly fluorescent ceiling fixtures, than it’s too-bright bathroom lights that emphasize your flaws (like you need that as you head out the door to work in the morning). Believe it or not, changing out the light fixtures and installing dimmer switches in your apartment is a relatively easy process, which has a huge impact on the overall feeling and mood of the place (imagine leaving for work every morning feeling smokin’ hot, instead). You can find great cheap fixtures on eBay. Just remember to carefully save and store the old fixture so you can reinstall it when you move out.

7. Hardware: A lot of rentals have god-awful kitchen cabinetry and closet doors. While changing those parts falls far into the “not worth it” category, you can put lipstick on the proverbial pig by changing out the hardware. You’ll be surprised to see what a huge difference a cute knob or drawer-pull can make. Anthropologie has a great selection.

8. It’s Curtains: Most rental apartments don’t come with drapes (usually they have infuriating, malfunctioning, dusty blinds, if anything). So if you would like to avoid providing a free peep show to the neighborhood, you are going to have to hang something anyway. Luckily, a pretty curtain rod with some simple drapes can do a lot to create ambiance in a room (heavy pleated ones give an air of old-fashioned sophistication, light-colored sheers are soft and beachy). Look on eBay for pretty ones from Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware for cheap prices. Or try your hand at sewing some.

9. Add Some Plants: If you want your apartment to feel like a place where people really live, it helps to have some real living things in it. A few well-selected houseplants can go a long way toward making an apartment feel warm and alive. I love a long-living orchid, a hard-to-kill succulent, or a self-maintaining terrarium.

Personal Wedding Gifts

Q. Hi Jordan!

I remember you responding to a reader question about getting wedding gifts outside the registry and you said ‘Meh…not unless you’re really close to the Bride and Groom.’ I totally agree with you, [but] here’s the thing - I am REALLY close to this Bride and Groom. I played matchmaker to my brother and best friend, and voila! 3 years later, they are getting married!

I want to get them a great, special, personal gift, but money is tight (I mean, when is money not tight?!? Do you ever get questions that begin with “I have limitless funds and…”?!) I want the gift to be special, because both of them are so special. Maybe spend between $100-$150, if possible. I decided to Etsy it up, but I guess I don’t have the same skills as you because I got nothin’…so I ask…WWJD, What Would Jordan Do?

-Kristen

A. Hey Kristen!

How cool that your brother and best friend are getting married…that’s SO exciting.

OK, so ordinarily I think that it’s best to stick to the registry (plus a small additional gift if you want to do something more personal)…but you’ve got a totally special case.

My favorite personalized wedding gift is a reproduction vintage map of either the town where the couple met, the town where they live, or the town where they’re getting married. If you put it in a gorgeous frame, that should fall right within your budget constraints (but FYI, if you get it matted and do all that fancy stuff, the price can go up very quickly).

A lot depends on how well you feel like you know their taste - for example, would you feel comfortable getting them a piece of art? I love Larry Carlson’s work; he does digital photo and mixed-media art, and his stuff is pretty reasonable (I bought a gorgeous piece - it’s hanging in our kitchen - at the Union Square Greenmarket for $75).

Also, how crafty are you? You might want to consider something like a hand-knit blanket or a personalized wooden chest (they can keep everything from blankets to photo albums and mementos to baby things in it). You can get beautiful wooden chests on Etsy if you’re not a woodworker, and of course there are tons and tons of cozy, hand-knit blankets for sale - just be sure to pay attention to their color scheme.

You could also do “A Year Of Dates” - come up with one special thing for them to do every month for the first year of their marriage, and arrange it for them. This can be anything from a picnic in the park to a concert to a night at a video game parlor…it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune if you get creative, and I bet they’d be blown away. It’s best to be flexible re: time for most of the events, so that they don’t feel obligated to work their schedules around the dates - for example, you can give them a coupon for a homemade picnic lunch on any weekend in May, and then when they tell you when they’d like to go show up in the morning with a loaded picnic basket and send them on their way.

Let me know what you decide to do!!

-J

What I Went With

Nails:

Secret Stash on fingers, Russian Navy on toes. I ended up doing both my manicure and pedicure myself, so I had to use shades I already owned. Next time: Bright Tights! Love that color.

(FYI: Unfortunately, sand and Russian Navy do not go together particularly well; the color got pretty dusty and dull within a couple of days. But no matter! The aforementioned sand covers up my toes nicely.)

Books:

Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea

My Horizontal Life (yeah, two Chelsea Handlers - been wanting to read those for awhile)

High On Arrival (whoa; that’s why I look so serious in the above picture)

__

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (I decided to buy the other two once I finish this one, since Kindles don’t require extra trips to the store)

The Hunger Games (just started)

The Help

Summer Sisters

One Day

Handle With Care

(The line separates the ones I’ve read so far from the ones I haven’t.)

P.S. Kindles are officially the best invention on the planet.

Thank you so much for all the recommendations!!! I’ll be trying out lots more of them over the next few months. We have many beachy days ahead of us.

Philly Day Trip / Happy Life In NYC

I used to travel to Philly occasionally to watch Kendrick’s band perform, and I always thought it was a really underrated day-trip-from-NYC spot. Thanks so much to Philly native (and new blogger) Lauren for offering to show us around!

- Jordan

I am so honored to be guest blogging for Jordan! I adore her blog and it’s part of the inspiration behind mine. I am a native Philadelphian turned New Yorker, so there is nothing I love more than going back to my second home in Philly.

Here are my ideas for a day or weekend trip there. Enjoy!

Getting there

There are several options for getting from NYC to Philly, depending on the time of day you want to go and the amount of money you want to spend. Here’s a list from cheapest to most expensive:

Bus

The bus is a great option during non-rush hour times. Try Mega Bus ($7-$11) or Bolt Bus ($8-$13). Both take about 2 hours, longer if there’s traffic.

Train

New Jersey Transit is my personal favorite way to get to Philly, unless I’m in a huge rush or have tons of luggage. You’ll have to transfer at Trenton from NJ Transit to SEPTA in order to get to 30th St. Station in Philadelphia. The trains are right across the platform form each other so it’s super easy - you won’t have to wait more than 10 minutes at the most. The cost is about $24 total and the total time is about 3 hrs.

Another option is Amtrak. This is the most reliable form of transportation but also the most expensive. I’ll only take it Amtrak I can score one of their $48 tickets; otherwise you might end up paying anywhere from $60 to $218! Amtrak takes anywhere from 1 hour and 10 min to 1½ hours.

Car

You can always rent a car, especially if you’re travelling with a group. The drive takes about 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Once you get there …

You’ll need to get from 30th Street Station into Center City, Philadelphia. There are a couple of options for getting around the city:

Septa

You can hop on Septa and take it into Center City Philadelphia, to either Suburban Station or Market East. Suburban Station lets you off at 16th and JFK Boulevard, while Suburban Station brings you to 12th and Market. Get off at Suburban Station if you want to head to Old City for the historic sites.

Cab

A cab will cost anywhere from $5 to $15 depending on traffic and where you want to go. Not a bad option, especially if you’re with a group.

Learn the story behind cheesesteaks, hoagies, pretzels, and other Philly food favorites during this 75-minute walking tour led by a food writer. There are several options for tours.

Shopping

One of the best things about going to Philly is THERE IS NO TAX ON CLOTHES, or at least clothes that are considered “necessities.” It can sometimes be a little fuzzy what’s taxable and what isn’t, but I never pay tax on designer jeans or shoes.

Old City and Northern Liberties

The once-scruffy blue-collar neighborhood along the Second and Third Street corridors is filling up with all kinds of boutiques. Check out Vagabond Boutique, Sugarcube, Third Street Habit, and Charlie’s Jeans .

Rittenhouse Row

Rittenhouse Row goes from the Avenue of the Arts (Broad Street) to 21st Street, between Spruce and Market Streets. The stores around here are a little more upscale and chic. Check out Club Monaco, Juicy Couture, Barney’s New York, the Shops at Liberty Place, Second Time Around, and BCBG.

South Street

South Street stretches about 10 blocks between Front Street and 10th Street. It’s a great place to people-watch and it has a wonderfully eclectic lineup of tons shops, eateries, cafes, and bars. Most stores are independently owned.

Restaurants

There are tons of great restaurants in Philly, so I’m not even sure where to start. My personal favorites are the BYOBs. You will be amazed at how much money you’ll save on a night out compared to a night in NYC.

Here are just a few suggestions:

For lunch, check out Sabrina’s Café, Illuminare, Café Lift, or Farmicia.

For dinner, try Continental Midtown, Alma de Cuba, 10 Arts by Eric Ripert, or Lolita.

Hope that helps you plan your trip! Please leave comments if you have other recommendations. This is far from an exhaustive list!

Cupcake Vineyards Wine

Dad and I came across Cupcake Vineyards wine at the wine store a couple of weeks ago, while shopping for Mom’s birthday dinner (click here to check out the Lemon-Chocolate Birthday Cake we made). We didn’t buy it, because we were on the hunt for a white…but I think it just sounds spectacular.

Listen to the description of the 2009 Red Velvet (about $12/bottle): “It’s reminiscent of a blackberry chocolate cupcake with a mocha coulis. Shows an incredible nose of chocolate, deep rich blackberries, red fruits and a creamy mocha finish that is unmistakable in its intensity and length.”

In other words, I would like to fill a bathtub with the stuff and roll about in it for hours, please.

Has anyone tried Cupcake Vineyards? Is it as wonderful as it looks?

Accessible Decor / Make Black & White Warm & Cozy

A black & white palette naturally lends itself to a modern look…but it doesn’t have to be cold or harsh in the slightest. The key: keep everything else textured and soft.

In the photo above, even those sculptural chairs are graceful and curved, and the fabrics are all light and gently draped. Natural elements (coral, plants, and of course a beautiful view) provide the finishing touches on a pretty, perfect design scheme.

Get the look:

S Chair ($69 down from $430.95)

Cream curtain with Antiqued Brooch Curtain Tie-Back ($14)

Daydreamer Settee ($549)

Table Lamp ($89.99)

Sonoma Coral Accent ($24.99)

Last Night

I totally broke out the Club Monaco Sparkle Shorts. I couldn’t wait for the whole tan thing to happen (no worries, though - by now my feet and various patches around my torso area are a lovely lobster-red).

They came in handy for the steel-drum-infused karaoke version of Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me” (it also wasn’t me singing, which is a good thing).

Side Table Rehab / Yay! DIY

Please give a warm welcome to the lovely Erin & Lia from YAY! DIY - check out their site for everything from lamp refurbishes (you know I love those) to Grown-Up Arts & Crafts and interviews with yours truly.

- Jordan

First of all, hello everyone! We’re so excited to be guest posting for Jordan while she soaks up the sun this week!

Like Jordan, my co-blogger Erin and I are big fans of dragging in furniture off the street to fix up and make our own.  This little end table was no exception. Walking one night in my old neighborhood, I spied it next to pile of trash destined for the landfill and immediately knew I had to rescue it. (There were actually two, but I could only carry one at a time in the cold all the way home. Not going back for the second one is a decision I still regret!)

For the last year, the table has stood in the entrance way of my apartment, where I dump everything from spare change to the dog’s leash onto it daily. But when Jordan asked us to post, I knew the time had come for its extreme makeover, changing it from this:

to this:

As you can see, though the table is the first thing you see when you walk in the door, it  also sits next to the entranceway that leads to the kitchen (which is bright green and accented with splashes of yellow and blue). So, I got to work on its transformation - and it was quite easy! If you have any kind of plain table that you also want to spruce up, you can follow these same simple steps for the same effect (regardless of your particular table’s size).

Here’s how you do it:

What you’ll need:

- House paint

- A good-quality paint brush ($6 should do the trick)

- Spray paint (Rust-oleum is a personal favorite as the brand offers a wide variety of pretty colors and dries extremely quickly)

- Professional stencil (if you don’t want to make one) or cardstock

- Small paint brush (to fix mistakes)

What you do:

Step 1: Before you get going, give the entire table a wipe down with a damp rag to remove dust and dirt.  This will make the painting process much easier.

Step 2: This little table has two drawers that both needed to be painted.  I removed the knobs and set them aside for the time being.

Step 3: Apply two coats of base paint to the entire table and drawers. I used the leftover green paint from the kitchen to turn the table from white to green, letting it dry about 12 hours between coats.

Step 4: For your stencil, you can go a few ways. One, you can simply purchase a stencil at your local craft or hardware store. This is makes this project super easy, especially if you want to save some time.

If you want something specific, try making your stencil! I’ve been wanting to put a little fleur de lis accent somewhere in the house for a while, and figured that this was the perfect opportunity. I found a free image of one via Google, held up a piece of light cardstock against the computer screen and simply traced it. If you have a printer, you can also print it out onto the cardstock for an even easier time (Google turns up all sorts of free stencil templates). Once you have something you love, cut it out using an x-acto knife or scissors.

Step 5: Once you’ve got your stencil, lay it down firmly on the table. You want it to be as flat as possible to avoid leaks.  Give the inside one good coat with the spray paint, and wait an hour, until dry.

Step 6: I also gave the little knobs I had set aside earlier a coat of yellow spray paint to make them pop.

Step 7: Almost there! Remove your stencil, and fix any spray paint leaks using your small paintbrush and your base paint.

That’s it!  We hope you enjoyed reading!  For more crafting and cooking ideas, visit us at www.yaydiy.com! (as in yay!).

5-Minute Chocolate-Banana Cream Pie

Every summer for years, my parents and I rode their motorcycles up to Canada to visit my mom’s family in Moncton. When I finally got my own motorcycle - a yellow Suzuki Savage 650 that I very much wish I still owned - at age 17 (I know; and wow, did I feel super cool), we started all driving up together in a semi-adorable, mostly-bizarre little pack.

These trips were some of my favorite times that I’ve ever spent with my family: there was such a feeling of shared adventure, riding that far together. Every time we got off at rest stops we were so exhausted it felt as if we’d jogged all that way; motorcycle riding is a hell of a lot harder on the body than most people think. My favorite part of the trip was the Airline Road, an old logging road (now Route 9) which extends from Bangor to Calais, and which is pretty straight and featureless with the exception of one very crucial structure: the Airline Diner.

The pies.

Oh my god, the pies.

Blueberry is good, lemon meringue is better…but there is simply nothing in the world like the chocolate cream pies that they serve at this place. We’re talking two inches of chocolate pudding topped with another three of whipped cream in a perfect, flaky crust. I remember once we arrived just as the last slices were being served up to a family of four, and I just about cried until the waitress came out bearing a fresh, new pie.

That’s a picture of me at the Airline Diner - clearly very excited to have my photo taken - from the summer before my freshman year of college began. I haven’t been there in years - nowadays, it seems like no one has time for the trip, and we fly to Canada and back - but I swear: one day, I’ll go back. And I’ll get that recipe for you.

In the meantime, here is what I do when I miss those trips to the Airline Diner. Now, this pie is 100% not from scratch and takes five minutes from start to finish (really)…but it tastes like a dream. Like, eat-the-entire-pie-in-one-sitting-because-it’s-that-light-and-perfect dream.

(Sidenote: embarrassingly enough, I’ve been wandering around for years going on and on about “My Five-Minute Pie”…and two days ago, I discovered that it’s pretty much exactly - or…ok…exactly - the recipe on the side of the Jello Chocolate Pudding box. But whatever; it’s great stuff. And as a bonus, this is one of those dishes in which you can easily reduce the calorie count without sacrificing any taste…and I don’t believe that’s possible in very many situations. But if you want the full-fat stuff, substitute away.)

5-MINUTE CHOCOLATE-BANANA CREAM PIE

Just fill the bottom of a graham cracker pie crust with two or three ripe bananas sliced into rounds. Then prepare fat-free chocolate pudding with skim milk, and pour into the crust. Top with fat-free Cool Whip and dot with peanut butter and chocolate chips, mini chips, or chocolate shavings. Or sprinkles. Or whatever makes you happy.

...And We're Off!

We’re leaving today to spend a week hanging out with those guys up there.

!!!!!!!

I’m a little unsure what the Internet situation is at our hotel - the fact that I haven’t been able to get a response to my email queries re: wireless connections doesn’t exactly instill a great deal of confidence - but I’m sure I’ll manage to do some posting from down south. In the meantime, though, I have some fun stuff queued up for you in the coming week, including some fantastic guest posters.

(Above, what happened to me last time my skin came into contact with actual sunlight. Hopefully I’ll do a bit better sunscreen-wise this go-round.)

P.S. Big thanks to Francesca and Morgan for watching over the kids while we’re gone!

Rain Africa / Beautiful Bath & Home Products

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to mention this company - I’ve literally been meaning to tell you guys about it since last November, when my Dad and I stopped into the store near Rockefeller Center looking for Christmas presents for my mother and pretty much bought the place out.

Rain Africa produces beautiful, highly gift-able bath and home products using indigenous African flowers and medicinal plants. Everything is hand-made in a small, rural factory with the hopes of providing employment opportunities and decreasing poverty in Southern Africa…and everything is something that you’ll want (or will want to give to someone).

I wish I could ship these products to all of you myself; they just smell…and feel…and look that incredible. My favorites are those little round balls that you see in the above image: called “Earth Eggs,” they’re basically tiny bath bombs filled with cocoa butter and coated with herbs and seeds (the company also sells little muslin pouches to collect the herbs in in case you don’t want them floating about your bathtub).

A very cool service they offer: you can bring in your own jar (or buy a reusable one in the store) and customize a scrub using the company’s range of oils, “actives” (things like green tea, ginger, lavender, and rosehip), essences, and bases. Gorgeous, fun, and eco-friendly.

More favorite products:

Clockwise from top left: Kenyan Coffee Sliced Soap ($5.20), which smells exactly like a chocolate sticker that I had in my sticker album when I was seven…and although that may sound gross, it’s actually intoxicating; Lavender Earth Egg ($4/each); Aloe & Avocado Foam Bath ($26); Avocado Soap in Bag ($19; ideal for the kitchen); Cream Bath Mat ($44); Wild Cotton Organic Scented Sachets ($20).

Fortuitous Things

Me: You know what I would really like for lunch? Some scrambled eggs. An english muffin with half avocado and lemon, half peanut butter. Really cold cantaloupe. And like six blackberries.

My Kitchen: I think I can make that happen for you.
